We’ve had a substantial increase to the snow pack during the late winter period, and still have the possibility of more on the way between now and the early Spring. With the potential for a lot of moisture soaking into the ground around your home, a wet basement is the last thing you want to complicate your life.

With the spring thaw imminent, one of the most important preventative maintenance tasks a homeowner can accomplish to prepare for the melting snow is to ensure their sump pump is operational. The sump pump system is very susceptible to failure due to long periods of inactivity and things such as rodents and bugs clogging the drain. The maintenance is easy for most homeowners.

1. Remove any debris that might clog the pump.

2. Slowly pour at least 3 gallons of water into the pit to verify the pump automatically operates and evacuates the water from the pit. If it does not operate have the pump serviced or replaced before the big melt.

During warmer weather it is a good idea to run a garden hose to the pit letting a slow stream of water run and allow the pump to operate more than a few moments at a time. The drain end can be a nice nesting place for bugs and critters so a screened end cap is recommended.

Spring is one of our traditional wet seasons, thus making our homes most susceptible to the backup of sewer
or drain lines. While these events don't occur often, when they do, the problem can be a small disaster.

Did you know that backup of sewer and drains as well as the failure of a sump pump is excluded from your basic Homeowner coverage? For an additional premium, limits of $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000 or $25,000 worth of protection for water that backs up through sewers, drains or overflows from a sump, even if such overflow results from a mechanical breakdown of the sump pump, can be purchased.
