In 2004, 1,237,114 motor vehicles were reported stolen which is a decrease of 23,357 vehicles from 2003. Overall in the United States, motor vehicle theft was down by 1.9 percent. The FBI reports that in 2003 the Northeast saw a reduction in auto theft of 9.7 percent auto theft. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), every 23 seconds a vehicle is stolen in the United States. One-third of those vehicles are never recovered. If your auto is not on the top ten stolen vehicle list be thankful. However, choosing to ignore simple safety measures could open an invitation to theft.
