An earthquake is caused by sudden and rapid shaking of the Earth caused by breaking or shifting in rocks beneath the Earth's surface.

Terrible shocks and aftershocks can cause deaths and injuries and extensive property damage.

Earthquakes can cause building collapse and disrupt gas, electric and phone service.

They can trigger landslides, avalanches, flash floods, fires and tidal waves.

Know what to do before, during and after an earthquake. Select an option below.

Before

  • Put together an Emergency Supply Kit.
  • Choose a location where family members will meet if separated during the earthquake.
  • Plan an evacuation route. This should be the quickest route to a safe location. Also establish alternate routes in case the quickest route is unavailable.
  • Appoint an out-of-town relative to be your "family contact". After a disaster, anyone not at home should contact this person.
  • Keep valuable papers and other important items in secure places.
  • Fuel your car in case you need to leave your home.
  • Plan and hold an earthquake drill for your family.

During

  • Keep calm. Expect the earthquake to last from a few seconds to several minutes.
  • If indoors, stay there until the shaking stops. Drop to the floor and take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture. Stay in this position until the shaking stops.
  • Do not go outside even if the quaking appears to have stopped. To ensure the earthquake has ended, turn on your TV, radio, smart phone, laptop, tablet, etc. or contact the local authorities. Roads may be blocked by utility lines, broken limbs, or emergency and maintenance vehicles.

If you're OUTSIDE when an earthquake occurs

  • Move into an open area away from trees or buildings. Stay in the open area until shaking stops.

If you're in your CAR when an earthquake occurs

  • Turn on your radio for emergency information or instructions
  • Pull to the side of the road and stay in your vehicle. Avoid stopping near buildings, trees and utility wires.
  • Once the earthquake stops, proceed cautiously.

After

  • Turn on your TV, radio, smart phone, laptop, tablet, etc. for emergency information or instructions.
  • Return home only when local authorities advise it is safe to do so.
  • Check for injuries.
  • Don't move an injured person, unless they are in immediate danger.
  • Before entering your home, check for any structural damage.
  • Upon entering your home, look for hazards such as loose wires, damaged gas lines and submerged electrical appliances.
  • Have all utilities and electrical appliances checked by a professional before use.
  • Boil all drinking water.
  • Clean up any glass or other debris from the earthquake to prevent any further injury and/or damage. Wear proper shoes and gloves when cleaning up.
  • Protect your property from further damage by using plywood, tarps or other materials to cover broken windows or holes in roofs.
  • Make a list of your damaged property and do not dispose of it. Do not throw anything away as your insurance adjustor needs to inspect damaged items.
  • Save receipts for any money you spend related to the loss. Your insurance company may need these to settle your claim.
  • It's important to contact your NYCM Insurance Agent right away to report any damages to your property. You can also contact us directly at 800-234-6926. Customer Service is available 24/7/365.
